Applications of Silica Sand
Silica sand is the one of the most available elements in the
earth. The chemical bond of silica is SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide) consisting of one
silicon and two oxygen atoms. Most of the silica sand is made from crushing the
quartz crystals. It has a wide range of applications. These applications are:
1. Glass Making: Silica is the primary component of all types of glass. SiO2 is the essential component of glass formulation. The Purity of silica sand is 99.3%. Some of Glass Products are bottles, container, test tubes, etc.
2. Water filtration: It is used for Water filtration, Drinking Water filtration, processing of sewage water and pool filtration. In this silica sand and gravel are infill in the tank and from the top of the tank; water is pumped with the high pressure. When the water passes out the sand, the sand holds bacteria and other microorganism. This filter media is inexpensive and very reliable.
3. Mold casting: Foundries industry is used for sand casting process to make the final product. Over 70% of metal castings are performed by the sand casting process. It is a cheap and reliable method because it can be reuse after that. The basic principle of silica sand casting is that it acts as a mold for final design. It is an easy way to make molds for fountains and outdoor ovens, after casting the concrete; it’s very easy to remove.
4. Artificial Grass: Sand is also used to infill the artificial grass to stand up grass fibers. It is inexpensive and Eco friendly material and it also absorbs the extra water from the grass very fast.
5. Construction: It is the primary component of building material. Whole Grain Silica sand is put to use in mortars, roofing shingles and in flooring compound.
6. Sand blasting: Sand Blasting is the method to clean the surface of metal coating, painting, any rust, etc. It is the one of the effective ways to shape the surface of any material. Sand blasting use compressed air to blast. This compressed air quickly cleans the surface of any metal.
